Where the Crawdad’s Sing

Great Book

Where the Crawdad’s Sing stars Catherine Danielle Clark “Kya” is the youngest of five siblings growing up in a small cabin in a remote marsh on the coast of North Carolina. When Kya is six years old her mother walks out and doesn’t look back. Her abusive, alcoholic father spirals out of control and one by one the older siblings leave to escape him. Her mother sends a note which makes her dad spiral more out of control, he leaves and doesn’t return. Kya has no reading, math or writing skills to help her in her journey of life. Her nickname is the “marsh girl”.

Kya starts a relationship with Tate Walker, who was a friend of her older brother Jodie. He teaches her to read and write. When Tate leaves for college, he promises to return to Kya. While away, Tate realizes she could never adjust to his social world again. He decided to not return to Kya, breaking her heart.

Kya starts a relationship with Chase Andrews, a local young man. Tate comes back to rekindle but Kya has moved on and refuses to forgive him. Kya sees in the newspaper that Chase has become engaged to someone else. Chase’s body is found near the swamp and appears that he has fallen or was he pushed out of a watchtower?

After an investigation Kya is arrested but could she actually have pushed Chase Andrews to his death?

My Opinion

Where the Crawdad’s Sing is a book about hope, survival, love, loss and desperation. This book goes back and forth to tell the story of Kya aka” the marsh girl”. Living alone in the marsh, the locals look down upon her, she is judge and ridiculed. But Kya has so much love in her heart. I loved this book!

Kya was so young when her mother left and never came back. Her father was abusive and an alcoholic. All her siblings left to escape him but she was left behind. She was left to cook, clean and take care of all of their basic needs. Then her father leaves and never returns. She has to learn how to get her own food. She is dealing with an array of emotions such as loneliness and feelings of abandonment and loss.

This book has a bit of everything murder mystery, romance and drama. There were alot of people that degraded Kya but there were some people who showed her love and kindness. Tate, even though he left her, has always cared about her well-being. He helped her learn to read and write. His heart always belonged to Kya.

This book also had a police investigation, courtroom drama and some twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. This book is written beautifully and the marsh is written so vividly. I highly recommend this book.
