What are your Thanksgiving Traditions?
What are your Thanksgiving Traditions?
Thanksgiving is a wonderful time of year. It is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. In 1863, the President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving day to be held in November.
For most families Thanksgiving traditions are a given. Some people watch the Macy’s parade, watch or play football and have a true traditional family dinner. But there are other traditions that you and your family can adopt this Thanksgiving.
Play Football
Whether you are watching or playing football, it should be part of your turkey day.
Bless the Food
Express gratitude for family, friends and food with a meaningful prayer. Make it a tradition to go around the table and to say what you are thankful for.
Watch March of the Wooden Soldiers
Watching March of the Wooden Soldiers in my family is a tradition. We watch it while we cook Thanksgiving dinner and then again while we eat dinner.
Use your Best China
Thanksgiving dinner is the day to bring out the fine china. Celebrate Thanksgiving dinner on beautiful festive plates.
Set up Kids Crafts
Keep the children occupied with some crafts. DIY crafts or ones from the dollar tree are great. I bought my kids crafts from Hobby Lobby.
Go for a Post Thanksgiving Walk
When your Thanksgiving feast has ended. head outside for a nice walk. Walk off some of that delicious turkey !
Try a new recipe
Just because you love your traditional Thanksgiving dinner menu doesn’t mean you can’t try and spice things up. Try making a new dish for everyone to enjoy.
Set the table with the kids
Having your children help set the Thanksgiving table is something special to share each year. We normally eat dinner in our kitchen. This year we are going to eat in the dining room.
Split the wishbone
This is an old tradition in my family; splitting the wishbone
Wrap up leftovers for family and friends
Send care packages home with your guests. If your anything like me you made way too much food and will glad to share it with your guests.
Finish with pie
Our tradition in my house is cherry pie, apple pie and of course pumpkin pie.
Watch Macy’s day parade
This is a tradition in my family. In between watching March of the Wooden Soldiers we watch the Macy’s parade. We love seeing the blow ups.
Enjoy turkey leftovers
The day after Thanksgiving I always make a turkey sandwich with mayo and cranberries. During the week I use the leftovers and make Sheppard’s pie.
Big Turkey
We always make a big turkey usually about 20-25 lbs. We love to have left overs.
Nut Bread
We always make nut bread every Thanksgiving. It was my mom’s recipe. She passed away 3 years ago, I still make it every Thanksgiving.
Friends Thanksgiving
Having a friend’s Thanksgiving is the new thing right now. Last year our friends decided to come and visit for Thanksgiving. We had such a great time. Celebrating Thanksgiving with family and great friends is the best way to celebrate this holiday. The kids enjoyed themselves too.
