Amityville Horror
The house on 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, N.Y., an upscale Long Island suburb, was the site of a brutal family murder. 23-year-old Ronald DeFeo, Jr. shot and killed his parents and four younger siblings on November 14, 1974. But much of the legend surrounding the home stems from the family who moved in a little over year after the murders. George and Kathy Lutz and their four children, knowing about the tragic events that had taken place, agreed to see the property. Which included a 4,000 square foot house, waterfront access, a boathouse, heated swimming pool, garage and full basement. They eventually bought the house.
Things happened dramatically shortly after. They experienced unexplained paranormal activity such as strange odors, doors slamming, someone yelling Get Out !, unexplained cold drafts and demonic pig like creature. The Lutz family lasted 26 days before moving out.
The White House
There have been numerous reports that the White House has had haunting activity. Visitors, staff and even White House residents have reported seeing the ghosts of Abraham Lincoln, Abigail Adams and Andrew Jackson, to name a few. FDR, Dwight Eisenhower and Winston Churchill are among those who claimed to have seen the ghost of Abraham Lincoln. More recently, the Obamas claim to have repeatedly heard strange sounds and felt a sensation of someone gnawing at their feet in the middle of the night. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill reportedly encountered Lincoln’s ghost as well, while he was stepping out of the bathtub.
Myrtles Plantation-St Francisville, Louisiana
This house is one of the most haunted houses in America. The house was built in 1797. Dozens of deaths have occured illnesses, poisoning and murder. Visitors and former residents claim to have witnessed many strange occurrences: disappearing jewelry; waking to find themselves completely tucked into their beds; furniture that moves on its own; a grand piano that plays by itself; mysterious handprints; and objects and people appearing and disappearing randomly in photographs.
Wolfsegg, Germany
This 800-year-old castle in the municipality of Wolfsegg, Germany, is apparently haunted by a woman who scares off any visitors who pass. She is rumored to be the ghost of Klara von Helfenstein, who was reportedly murdered by her jealous husband.
The Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, Colorado
This place was the inspiration for Stephen King’s book The Shining but it also has a spooky past. Staff members have encounters ghosts such as a maid who unpacks clothes when the guests aren’t looking.
Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast: Fall River, Massachusetts
In 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were found dead, killed by someone with an ax. The number one suspect was Andrew’s daughter Lizzie. Lizzie stood trial for the murders but was acquitted. She is now said to be haunting the home in Massachusetts where her parents were murdered and her ghost can be heard laughing at the top of the stairs.
Kehoe House, Savannah, Georgia
This Queen Anne brick mansion is set in Savannah Georgia and was built in 1892 for WIlliam and Anne Kehole and their 10 children. A few of the children died in the house. It is now a bed and breakfast. Guests have heard the sound of children playing.
Poveglia Island, Venice, Italy
Poveglia Island holds the decaying remains of an early 20th century insane asylum. Originally a quarantine zone for those suffering from the bubonic plague, Poveglia reportedly played host to brutal medical experiments. The asylum closed when a doctor flung himself from the institution’s highest tower.
