Helpful things to help relieve anxiety
Anxiety
Anxiety is different for everyone. I have suffered with anxiety for many years. It started when I was in around 8th grade/middle school. It started with I didn’t like people looking at me, it just made me feel uncomfortable. Guys started looking at me and I would start to feel sick to my stomach. If I had to get up in front of the class or if the teacher would call on me I would feel sick. Then it progressed to me actually vomiting. I did not like any attention being on me at all. The doctor did try to put me on medication back then by my parents declined. It got to the point where I refused to go to school. I was home schooled for a year and then to a boces school for 11th and 12th grade.
College
In college I remember having to do an oral report in a class for 10% of my grade. I had prepared for weeks and had written out all I had to do was read it to the class. I literally could not do it. The anxiety got to me. I was absent the day of the report. The following day when I returned the instructor asked me when I was going to do it. I never did make it up and I was ok with getting a 0 for the report as long as I did not have to get up in front of the class.
I still don’t like trains, buses, planes or anything I can’t get out of easily.
Ways to help Relieve Anxiety:
- Take Deep Breaths: When I go into full anxiety I will stop and take a few deep breaths and it will usually help
- Focus on things you can control: such as if i am hot I will remove my jacket, If I feel nauseous I will take a cool cloth and wipe my face, getting a glass of water and removing myself from the uncomfortable situation.
- Change your scenery: If your feeling anxious and you are able to step outside or just walk into another room can sometimes help
- Yoga: Meditation, visualization, and focusing on breathing can help with letting go of worry and fear.
- Reading: Pick a good book and sit in a nice quiet area on a comfortable couch or chair ( I just purchased an egg chair and I love it )
- Carry Medication: I always carry my anxiety medication with me. Sometimes just knowing I have it reduces the need for me to actually take it. I am not ashamed that I take medication. It is something that was prescribed by a doctor and is monitored very closely.
- Take a walk: Just go on a scenic walk and take some deep breaths
