Counseling for ADHD Child

Does counseling help for a child with ADHD? I believe the answer is yes. My son has struggled with ADHD since he was 5 years old. He has been in and out of counseling for years. I think the key point is that the child has the right counselor.

History

My son did counseling when he was first diagnosed with ADHD. It helped a little bit. Then a few years ago he had counseling in school but that did not work well. I didn’t get updated on his appointments and he did not like to be pulled from his classroom setting.

When my son was in 4th grade (about 1.5 years ago) I had a meeting at his school, and they advised me to get him into counseling. I called his pediatrician, and they gave me a referral to a counseling center. I immediately took a liking to her. She was very nice and down to earth. Her knowledge base on ADHD was excellent. My son took an immediate liking to her also.

Improvements

We have seen such an improvement in the past year and a half since he started. He is calmer and less irritable. He can verbalize his needs and wants better. Even his grades have gotten better. Michael is 11 years old and has been sleeping in our bed for many years. About a month ago he decided he wanted to sleep in his room. I am so proud of him for taking the initiative. He has slept in his bed for the past month without any issues. We have since decorated his room more since he’s in there a lot more. He even got a drum set for his birthday that it is in room. He even spends time in his room now. For Christmas he got a cell phone and has been able to message and call his friends.

I believe my son wouldn’t be where he is today if he didn’t have the proper counseling.
