Best Underwater Movies
Many movies have captured the mysteries of the ocean. Here, we celebrate some of the best underwater adventure movies. Horror films often use isolation and foreign environments to create an eerie and terrifying atmosphere. Check out some of my favorite underwater movies.
The Deep House
A young couple go to France to explore an underwater house and share their findings on social media. But their plans change when the couple enter the interior of the strange house located at the bottom of the lake. Their presence awakens a dark spirit that haunts the house.
The logistics of making a film underwater is just mind blowing. Underwater setting for a thriller/horror movie could be epic. I did love the idea of the movie since I am an avid horror fan. The characters swimming around deep in the lake and seeing the house underwater was amazing to me. The house looked like a normal house that was submerged in water. As they were swimming through the house it definitely had me at the edge of my seat with every room they entered.
I did have some issues with the film. The male main character was quite annoying and a know it all. The film was very dark so it was hard to tell what was happening at times. There were parts that were confusing and hard to follow. I did enjoy the film but it didn’t work in every aspect. But it was definitely worth watching.
47 Meters Down
Sisters Kate and Lisa travel to Mexico for a fun filled vacation of sun and adventure. The girls meet up with some guys who suggest they go scuba diving in the ocean. After careful consideration, the girls decide to go. They are in scuba gear in a protective cage and come face to face with a group of white water sharks. Their worst fear will soon become a reality as the cage breaks away from the boat and plummets 47 meters down in the ocean while only having limited oxygen.
I was pleasantly surprised with this movie; I really enjoyed it. Mandy Moore’s acting was excellent. This film generates both terror and claustrophobia in a way I wasn’t quite expecting. I really felt for these girls being locked in a cage underwater with sharks circling them. My heart was pounding. I loved the twist ending. This is a definite must see movie. Best Underwater Movies.
Open Water
Daniel and Susan embark on a tropical vacation with their scuba-diving certifications in tow. During a group dive, the two separate themselves from the others to dive a little deeper. An incorrect head-count suggests the entire group has returned, so the boat departs. When the pair surfaces, they make out a vessel in the distance, but it does not immediately set in that they have been left behind. With sharks lurking beneath, their survival chances grow smaller.
The film is loosely based on the true story of Tom and Eileen Lonergan, who in 1998 went out with a scuba diving group, Outer Edge Dive Company, on the Great Barrier Reef, and were accidentally left behind because the dive-boat crew failed to take an accurate headcount.
This movie was definitely a low budget movie. I enjoyed bits and pieces of the movie. When the couple resurface from scuba diving and realize their boat was done. I myself felt a sense of panic. They are swimming in cold water surrounded by sharks and no land within view. They do their best to pray that the boat realizes that they are missing and will come and rescue them. As the hours pass and sharks are circling it gets very unlikely that the someone is going to find them in time.
Jaws
When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper and grizzled ship captain Quint offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.
This classic movie came out in 1975 and was a huge hit for Steven Spielberg. I love this movie even now over 48 years later. When I go into the ocean I still have a fear of sharks. This is a definite must see movie.
12 Feet Deep
Two sisters must survive an entire night trapped beneath the fibreglass cover of a public pool. They are at the mercy of the night janitor, who sees the trapped sisters as an opportunity to solve some of her own problems.
I saw this movie on lifetime and I enjoyed it. The girls are swimming in a public indoor pool under water trying to get one of the girls engagement ring that sank to the bottom. When they rise to the surface the cover has been put on and are stuck there for the weekend. They try and put a hole in the cover. The janitor does come back and see them but decides to torture them instead of helping them get out.
47 Meters Down Uncaged
Four teenage divers go cave diving unaware that there are two great white sharks swimming around. The cave they are diving in houses an ancient Mayan city recently discovered by Mia’s explorer father and at present nobody else knows it exists. There are historic columns and historic artifacts but also 2 great white sharks swimming about. A crumbling pillar of rocks falls on their exit and they have to try to find a way out.
I loved this movie. It kept me on my toes almost the entire time. These girls are scuba diving in shark infested waters and the rocks fall on their exit. Now they have to find a way out without running out of air and getting eaten by a shark. There was some scenes where my anxiety went high. When the girls were going through these tight quarters and not knowing what is in front of them.
The shark scenes were my favorite. I would definitely recommend this movie.
Poseidon
After a huge rogue wave capsizes a luxury liner in the North Atlantic, individual survivors band together and traverse a hazardous upside-down maze that they hope will take them to safety. As the wrecked vessel fills with water, the survivors must call on hidden strengths and skills to face the fight of their lives.
This movie stars Kurt Russell, Richard Dreyfuss and Josh Lucas. Josh Lucas’s character ignores the captains orders to wait below for possible rescue. He decides to set out on his own to find safety. Its starts out as a solo mission but he then gets Kurt Russell’s character, her daughter and then a single mom with a son. Determined to fight their way to the surface, the group sets off through the disorienting maze of twisted steel in the upside-down wreckage. As the unstable vessel rapidly fills with water each must draw on skills and strengths they didn’t even know they possessed, fighting against time for their own survival and for each other.
This movie is the reason my son does not want to go on a cruise😉
