Sunburn is the term for damage caused by overexposure to UV rays from the sun or other sources, such as a tanning bed. Sunburn can vary from mild to severe. Sunburns can be painful and can increase the risk of cancer. After sun creams can help soothe the pain of sunburn.
1. Use sunscreen
Use sunscreen every time you are outside, even if the weather is cloudy. Sunscreen needs to be placed all over your body, including your face and tops of feet.
2. Apply sunscreen frequently
Sunscreen should be applied before going outside and waiting 10 mins before going into the water. It should be reapplied every 2 hours or every 80 mins if your in the water. Remember to do this to prevent a sunburn.
3. Wear a hat
It will protect from the sun’s harmful rays, help reduce the risk of skin cancer and help prevent sunburn. There are so many cute hats to choose from; fedora type hat or a baseball hat.
4. Where sunglasses
Wearing sunglasses can protect you from the UV rays that can damage your vision. If you expose your eyes to UV light for a light period of time you could be looking at sun damage.
5. Avoid tanning beds
tanning beds can:
- damage your eyes
- weaken your immune system
- increase your risk of cancer
- can make you look older
- they can interact with certain medications
6. Stay in the shade
This will not prevent sunburn 100%. But staying under an umbrella or a tent can help lessen the chance of a sunburn.
7. Wear UPF clothing
Ultraviolet protective factor indicates how much UV radiation a fabric allows to reach your skin. A UPF 50 blocks 98% of the sun’s rays and allows 2% to penetrate, therefore reducing exposure significantly.
