SexLife tells the story of Billie Connelly, a stay at home mother of two, who finds herself longing for her wilder days as a single woman in New York City. Billie’s life with husband Cooper is comfortable, but she finds herself dreaming of what could have been with her ex-boyfriend, Brad. She starts to journal about her fantasies. Sex Life is inspired by a true story
This series is based on BB Easton’s book 44 Chapters about 4 Men, which was inspired by her own experiences in life.
Differences in the book and the series
BB Easton never got back together with her ex like Billie did with Brad in the show.
The show had an all female directing team
Having an all-female directing team helped create a safe space for the exploration of empowered celebration of female sexuality and desire in the show’s many sex scenes. There are six writers and 4 of them are women. It was very important that the show was both written and brought to life through a female gaze.
The creator insisted the scripts were explicit in detail for the sex scenes
It was very important to have all the details of our intimate scenes written out on the page very, very specifically. She wanted the script to read more than just “they have sex”. She believes each scene is not just about sex. This allowed the creator to work with the actors and the show’s intimacy coordinator to choreograph the intimate moments.
Adam Demos did NOT use a body double in the shower scene
There was some speculation whether a body double or that a prosthetic was used. Adam Demos says “a gentleman never tells”. The creator states that we are leaving it up to the viewer’s imagination.
Real life couple
Adam Demos (Brad) and Sarah Shahi (Billie) are a couple in real life. They fell in love after meeting on the set of Sex/Life in 2020 and their real-life relationship is equally as steamy. It is unknown exactly when the pair starting dating, but they went Instagram official in January 2021.
Sarah really fought for her role as Billie
According to the creator, Sarah came in and auditioned for the role as Billie. But she wasn’t satisfied with what she did. She went back to the casting director on her own to retape, possibly more than once. Sarah spoke about how much she connected with this character and how much she wanted the role.
Pilot episode
Sarah Shahi (Billie) revealed in an interview that she had to film several nude sex scenes for days, sometimes with multiple actors , for the sex montage on the pilot episode.
No body doubles
The cast did not use body doubles for any of the sex scenes or nude scenes.
Bees tattoo
In a flashback scene in episode 4, it is revealed that years ago Brad had 2 bees inked around his groin to commemorate Billie. The tattoo was also commemorated in the final episode when he declared his love to Billie.
